The Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University and the Social Mission Alliance have unveiled the winners of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Awards for Excellence in Social Mission in Health Professions Education.

This year's standout recipient in the category of Individual Excellence is none other than our own Dr. Lisa M. Meeks, PhD, MA, whose decades-long dedication to advancing inclusivity in health professions education has earned her this prestigious accolade.

A Legacy of Inclusion and Advocacy

Dr. Meeks' tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on health professions education. Her pioneering work focuses on dismantling ableism and fostering an inclusive environment for students with disabilities. Through strategic engagement with Health Professions Education (HPE) communities and associations, she provides actionable education to break down barriers and promote equality.

One of Dr. Meeks' standout achievements is the creation of the podcast "DocsWithDisabilities," that she co-hosts with Dr. Peter Poullos. The DocsWithDisabilities platform has a global impact reaching audiences in 100 countries. Through this medium, she helps to amplify stories of clinicians with disabilities, cultivating a supportive community and challenging preconceived notions.

Cultivating the Next Generation

Dr. Meeks is not only a champion for change but also a mentor and advocate for disabled trainees. In her research lab, she champions principles of disability justice, emphasizing interdependence and leadership from those most impacted. Actively recruiting and mentoring disabled individuals, she ensures financial support and accommodations, fostering a scholarly environment that is both equitable and accessible.

Her commitment goes beyond the academic realm, extending to conferences and scholarly pursuits where accommodations are provided to ensure inclusivity. Dr. Meeks' advocacy transcends individual efforts, contributing significantly to the vision of team based, equitable and inclusive health professions education.
